The High Commission of India in association with Study in India, Ministry of Education,Government of India organised an Education Fair in Lilongwe on July 18, 2024 at Hotel Crossroads. The Indian Education Fair 2024 was inaugrated by Hon'ble Deputy Minister of Education Nancy Chaola Mdooko. Over a dozen premier Indian Colleges/Universities participated at the fair. The education fair received overwhelming participation. In the evening, an alumni meet was also organised. Today, India is one of the three largest higher education systems in the world, with over 40 million students enrolled across 1,000+ universities and 42,000+ colleges nationally offering over 3500 programmes of study. India has also become a top destination for international students from all parts of the world including from Malawi. High-quality education at affordable fees, globally accepted degrees, English medium, wide choice of courses have made India, a preferred global education destination.

The Second Artificial Limb Fitment Camp
Under “India for Humanity” initiative, the 2nd Artificial Limb Fitment Camp (Jaipur Foot) was held between 24 July 2024 to 6th September 2024 at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe. During the 50-day Camp, 599 Malawian brothers and sisters (645 prosthesis) were fitted with artificial limbs and arms. On 6th September, a valedictory function was organised at Hotel Woodlands Lilongwe. The event was graced by Hon’ble Ms. Halima Daud, MP, Deputy Health Minister. Speaking at the event, Deputy Health Minister hailed India’s continuous developmental assistance to Malawi and termed Jaipur Foot camp as life changing. She also symbolically handed over artificial limbs and arms to few beneficiaries at the event. The first artificial limb fitment camp was held in 2018, in which about 500 Malawian brothers and sisters were fitted with artificial limbs. The event was attended by senior government officials, Ambassadors / High Commissioners, members of the Indian community among.

The 78th Independence Day of India was celebrated in Lilongwe with a flag-hoisting ceremony on 15 August, 2024 at the High Commission premises. High Commissioner of India, H.E. S. Gopalakrishnan, hoisted the tricolor, which was followed by singing of the National Anthem. Thereafter, the High Commissioner read out the address of the Hon’ble Rashtrapatiji to the nation on the eve of the 78th Independence Day. A cultural programme by the members of the community was also organised. The celebration was attended by members of Indian Community and friends of India enthusiastically in large number. The Chancery premise was decorated with tricolor to commemorate the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign. Community members and the Mission officials family members actively took part in “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign by uploading their selfies shot in the Selfie Booth installed at the mission. Members of the community also visited the Partition Horror Remembrance Day exhibition organised at the Chancery.

Malawi joined countries of Global South in the “ Third Voice of Global South Summit” hosted by India virtually on 17 August, 2024. Hon. Mr. Uchizi Mkandawire, M.P., Minister of Youth & Sports and Ms. Christina Zakeyo, Secretary for Trade and Industry participated in the Youth and Trade sessions respectively held on the overarching theme "An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future”. The “Voice of Global South Summit” under the theme "An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future” envisaged in bringing together countries of the Global South to share their perspectives and priorities on a common platform. The Summit included ten Ministerial sessions in key sectors besides opening and concluding sessions at Head of State/Head of Government level hosted by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The Summit witnessed participation of 173 dignitaries from 123 countries across the Global South.

High Commission celebrated 60th Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Day (ITEC Day 2024) on September 13, 2024 at Woodlands, Lilongwe. The celebration was graced by Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Nancy Tembo, M.P. The celebration was attended by Mayor for Lilongwe City, Her Worship Ms. Esther Sagawa, Senior Government officials of the Government of Malawi including Dr. Mwayi McLloyd Polepole, Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Blessings Chilabade, Secretary for Human Resource Management and Development, Mr. Ian Chingwalu, Principal Secretary, Human Resource Management, Dr. Macloud Kadamanja, CEO, Lilongwe City Council and over 170 ITEC alumni (both Civilian and Defence) among others. In his remarks, the High Commissioner H.E. S. Gopalakrishnan mentioned that “ITEC is an important cooperation programme of the Government of India for delivering technical assistance, technology transfer and capacity building for our developing country partners. Through this programme, India shares its development experience and expertise in various fields with over 160 countries around the world including Malawi. He further mentioned that India’s development co-operation with our partners flows from our philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ which means the ‘World is one Family’.” He also stated Malawi as one of the valued partners of India under the ITEC cooperation and the ITEC scholarship program had helped to further strengthen the existing cordial and friendly bilateral relations between Malawi and India. In her remarks, the Honourable Minister Ms. Tembo thanked India for its continued support to Malawi including through capacity building program under ITEC. The Minster said that ITEC program had been instrumental in enhancing skills among public and private sector officers thereby contributing to the development of the country. At the event, some of the ITEC alumni who shared their experiences in India during their training in India highlighted the relevance of the training in their career. ITEC, most successful partnership cooperation programme of India was instituted in 1964 and celebrated on 15th September every year. ITEC programme provides technical assistance, training/capacity building opportunities to partner countries in a range of fields including IT, banking, administration, audit, scientific to both civil and defence personnel. India offers over 300 short-term, medium-term and long-term courses every year in a wide and diverse range of skills and disciplines through over 50 empanelled institutions. Every year more than 15,000 training slots are offered to over 160 partner countries under ITEC programme in various fields. India offers 150 slots of training courses to Malawi every year. Since 2007, over 1100 Malawian nationals have availed training in India under the ITEC programme

The High Commission in association with Lilongwe City Council organised a tree planting event on Sepember 17, 2024 at Eden Park, Lilongwe as part of #Plant4Mother campaign. Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi launched “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” on the occasion of World Environment Day. The “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign continues to galvanise action and underscores the collective responsibility of protecting and sustaining our environment.

August 17, India hosted the 3rd Voice of Global South Summit (VOGSS) to take stock of the progress and deliberate on concrete way forward with over 120 leaders and representatives from the developing world across continents. Several attempts have been made to engage and provide for the disadvantaged nations during the past seven decades when India stood for the cause and wellbeing of the Global South as it is loosely defined. However, it is for the first time we are witnessing the institutionalization of this format. Especially now as the countries of the Global South have been made to suffer on account of global wars, conflicts and geo politics where they have no say but with huge stakes as they are directly and adversely impacted by such events and policies. India's gas production record estimated to secure high competitiveness in the energy sector

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi lauded the country's energy field achievement in gas production for the fiscal year of 2023-24, ultimately reflecting the sector's commitment in the national development and to secure India's role as a top competitor in the global market. The gas production in India for the year of 2020-2021 was 28.7 billion cubic meters (bcm), while for the year 2023-2024, it has been increased to 36.43 bcm. India has registered the highest ever growth in the value of defence production in 2023-24. The value of production has reached to nearly one lakh, 26 thousand and eight hundred eighty seven crore in 2023-24, which is 16.8 percent higher than the value of production of previous financial year. Sharing about the same in a social media post today, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh said that the Make in India programme is crossing new milestones, year after year, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.  Read more

India climbs 42 spots in Global Innovation Index over 9 years, ranks 39th

India has ascended 42 positions in the Global Innovation Index (GII) since 2015 and now ranks 39th out of 133 economies evaluated. The latest GII report, released on  September 27, 2024, showed India's remarkable progress in fostering an innovative ecosystem, reported ANI. The index, which assesses various factors contributing to innovation, has placed India at the top among the 38 lower-middle-income economies. In a special ceremony in St. Andrew Hall in the Kremlin, President of the Russian Federation, H.E. Mr. Vladimir Putin conferred Russia’s highest national award “The Order of St. Andrew the Apostle” on Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for his contribution to fostering India-Russia ties. Paris Paralympics 2024: India secures record 29 medals
India concluded its campaign at the Paris Paralympics 2024 with a record-breaking total of 29 medals, marking a significant improvement over the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. The impressive haul includes seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze medals, positioning India 18th in the overall medals tally. On the final day, Pooja Ojha was the last Indian athlete in action but did not secure a podium finish in the women’s kayak single 200m KL1 sprint canoeing event. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved another milestone with the successful launch of the EOS-08 Earth-observing satellite on Friday. The satellite was launched aboard the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at 9:17am IST on August 16, 2024. This launch marks the third mission for the SSLV, a relatively new addition to India's fleet of rockets, designed specifically for deploying small satellites into low Earth orbit. Read more
