High Commissioner hosts Malawi Parliamentary Committee on International Relations
High Commissioner S. Gopalakrishnan hosted a delegation of Hon’ble Members of the Parliamentary Committee on International Relations, Parliament of Malawi led by Hon’ble Patrick Bandawe, Chairperson of the Committee on 30 March, 2022. During the meeting, High commissioner briefed the Hon’ble Members of Parliament on India-Malawi bilateral relations and highlighted India’s assistance to Malawi under development partnership and through capacity building programmes. High Commissioner also briefed the Hon’ble members on various socio-economic development that have been taking place in India in recent years.

High Commission celebrated 72nd ICCR Foundation Day
High Commission celebrated 72nd ICCR Foundation Day on 9 April 2022. Prof. Emmanuel Kaunda, Vice Chancellor, LUANAR University was the Guest of Honour for the occasion. High Commissioner Mr. S. Gopalakrishnan, in his remarks, highlighted the role of ICCR in promoting cultural ties between India and various countries. He also highlighted India’s assistance to Malawi, including capacity building through scholarships and other trainings.

He also met Honourable Abida Sidik Mia, M.P., Minister of Water and Sanitation, on May 11, 2022 (bottom left), Honourable Timothy Mtambo, Minister of National Unity (middle bottom) on May 24, 2022 and on May 25, 2022, met Honourable Eisenhower Nduwa Mkaka, M.P., Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change (bottom right). The High Commissioner discussed bilateral relation and issues of mutual interests with the Ministers.

Visit of Shri V. Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs to the Republic of Malawi
Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, Shri V. Muraleedharan (MoS) paid an official visit to Malawi on 08-10 June 2022. During the visit, MoS called on the President of Malawi H.E. Mr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and discussed long-standing bilateral partnership and both agreed to give further impetus to the relations between India and Malawi. He also called on the Vice-President H.E. Mr. Saulos Klaus Chilima. In his bilateral meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Ms. Nancy Tembo, M.P., both ministers reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral relations between India and Malawi. During the visit, MoS also announced gifting of 200 laptops for the Members of Parliament of Malawi and donation of Anti-Cancer medicines worth US$ 1.4 mn. MoS visited Salima Sugar Factory in Salima district, which is one of the landmark projects executed under EXIM Bank Line of Credit in Malawi in 2016. MoS also attended a Community Reception hosted in his honour where he addressed and interacted with the members of Indian Community.

International Day of Yoga 2022
High Commission of India in Lilongwe celebrated the 8th International Day of Yoga at the India House on June 19, 2022. The theme of the 8th IDY was 'Yoga for Humanity'. A large number of yoga lovers, members of Indian Community and Friends of India enthusiastically participated at the celebrations.

Millennium University launches Yoga courses
On the occasion of the 8th International Day of Yoga, High Commissioner S. Gopalakrishnan launched two courses on YOGA on June 21, 2022 at the Millennium University, Blantyre. This was the first time that an educational institute in Malawi offered a course on Yoga. In his interview to media High Commissioner called on the other universities and institutions to emulate the initiative.

Blantyre Water Board (BWB) signed a contract with TATA Consulting Engineers
Blantyre Water Board (BWB) signed a contract with an Indian firm, TATA Consulting Engineers to prepare a detailed project report, feasibility study, design and project management consultancy services for development of 30 megawatts solar power plant for BWB to pump water from walkers ferry in Nkula site in Neno. BWB Executive Officer, Dr. Robert T. Hanjahanja said that this will help the organisation to move away from the national power grid and use renewable energy to pump water the solar plant to be functioning in the next 18 to 24 months. The project is part of US$ 215 mn LOC extended to Malawi Government by Exim Bank of India to upgrade BWB and Southern Region Water Board.

Indian Origin Entrepreneur donates K300m to Central Hospital in Blantyre
India Malawian entrepreneurs Hitesh and Meeta Anadkat, Chairman of First Capital Bank in Malawi and his wife Meeta Anadkat donated K300 million to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Malawi’s commercial capital Blantyre for the reconstruction of a state-of-the-art children’s emergency ward. In an interview with Nyasa Times, Anadkat, who said was born at QECH, said he was appalled at the current state of the facility following a visit he made after some doctors had approached him to see if he could render help. Much as QECH also caters for the Blantyre population, it is also the referral hospital for the southern region. Read more

NHAI Sets Guinness World Record For Laying 75 Km Highway In Just 105 hours
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has set a Guinness World Record by completing the longest highway length of 75 kilometers (km) of bituminous concrete in a single lane between Amravati and Akola in the record time of—105 hours and 33 minutes.
Earlier, the Guinness World Record for the longest continuously built bituminous was set in Doha, Qatar in February 2019 for constructing 25.275 km in ten days. Read more

India jumps 6 places to 37th rank on IMD’s World Competitiveness Index
India has witnessed the sharpest rise among the Asian economies, with a six-position jump from 43rd to 37th rank on the annual World Competitiveness Index compiled by the Institute for Management Development, largely due to gains in economic performance. Denmark has moved to the top of the 63-nation list from the third position last year, while Switzerland slipped from the top ranking to the second position and Singapore regained the third spot from fifth, a global study showed on June 15, 2022. Others in the top 10 include Sweden at the fourth position, followed by Hong Kong SAR (5th), the Netherlands (6th), Taiwan (7th), Finland (8th), Norway (9th), and the USA (10th). Read more

India-based music composer Ricky Kej won his second Grammy for the album ‘Divine Tides’ for which he collaborated with American legend Stewart Copeland. PM Narendra Modi attends G7 meeting in Berlin, Germany
While Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the G7 Summit in Germany on June 27 2022 he urged the G7 countries to consider promoting and investing in India’s emerging market for clean energy technologies. Speaking on climate, energy and health, he said that India has achieved the target of 40 per cent energy capacity from non-fossil sources nine years before time. He also highlighted that, although 17 per cent of the world’s population resides in India, its contribution of global carbon emissions is only 5 per cent. During the summit, Modi exchanged views with the leaders of the bloc and its partners on issues such as energy, food security, counter-terrorism, environment and democracy. Read more

PM launches 1st ever Chess Olympiad Torch Relay India to host 44th Chess Olympiad
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the historic torch relay for the 44th Chess Olympiad on June 19, 2022 at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi in a glittering ceremony. The event was attended by FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Shri. Anurag Singh Thakur, Minister of State for Sports Shri. Nishith Pramanik, Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand, the Indian Chess contingent and members of Chess Federations from various countries. For the first time in the history of the prestigious competition, India not only hosts the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad but is also the first country that starts off a torch relay that has been instituted by FIDE for the first time in the history of the competition which started in 1927. On May 27, 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the biggest Drone Festival in India – Bharat Drone Mahotsav 2022, at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.
