Increase in Scholarship slots under ICCR’s “India-Africa Maitri Scholarship Scheme” from 20 slots to 30 slots for the year 2026-27

The High Commission of India, Lilongwe is pleased to announce that Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India has increased the scholarship slots for Malawi under ICCR’s “India-Africa Maitri Scholarship Scheme” from 20 slots to 30 slots for the year 2026-27 to pursue higher education (UG/PG/Ph.D courses) in premier Indian Universities.   

The “India-Africa Maitri Scholarship Scheme” (formerly the Africa Scholarship Scheme) is a fully-funded program by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) designed to support African students in pursuing higher education in India.

For the year 2025-26, ICCR offered 20 scholarship slots for Malawi  under this Scheme and all the 20 slots were utilized by Malawi. During the last five years, approx. 90 Malawian youths availed and benefited from this scholarship.

Alumni of ICCR scholarships often become professionals, academics, entrepreneurs and policymakers in their countries. It is worthwhile to mention  that former President of Malawi H.E. Dr. Bingu wa Mutharika and current Foreign Minister of Malawi H.E. Dr. George T. Chaponda, MP are notable alumni of ICCR scholarships in Malawi who brought prestige to this flagship scheme. 

ICCR scholarships have helped in further deepening India-Malawi educational and cultural linkages.
