Celebration of 77th Republic Day of India
High Commission of India, Lilongwe organized Flag Hoisting Ceremony at ‘India House’ on 26 January 2026 morning to celebrate 77th Republic Day of India. High Commissioner of India, H.E. Shri Amararam Gujar, unfurled the tricolor, which was followed by National Anthem and reading out of Hon’ble Rashtrapati ji’ Address to the Nation on Republic Day 2026 by the High Commissioner.
2. Approximately 300 people from all walks of life, members of Indian Community and friends of India enthusiastically attended the celebration. During the programme, Mission arranged special singing of Vande Mataram song by the members of the Malayali Association to mark 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram. A selfie booth to commemorate 150 years of Vande Mataram was also set up at India House. Excitement among the people to take selfies with Vande Mataram@150 was noticeable.
3. In the evening, High Commissioner Shri Amararam Gujar hosted a Reception at Pearl Convention Centre, Lilongwe on 26 January, 2026 to commemorate 77th Republic Day of India. Hon’ble Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. George T. Chaponda, MP graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. A large number of guests including Ministers, Members of Parliament and senior officials from the Government of Malawi, Heads of Missions/International Organisations, representatives of UN Organisations, members of Indian community, friends of India, social media influencers and media persons attended the event. Among the senior dignitaries who participated in the Programme were Cabinet Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Chief Secretary to the President, Principal Secretaries (Equivalent to Secretary rank in GoI), and the National Police Chief. During the Programme, Mission also organised cultural performances including Odissi dance, folk dance by members of the Malawi Telugu Association (MATA) and fusion dance performance of Bharatnatyam and Odissi. Invitees, in large number, took photos at the Selfie Booth set up by the Mission to commemorate 150 years of Vande Mataram at the Convention Centre. A cake was also cut by the High Commissioner along with the Guest of Honour and other Ministers.
4. In his remarks, High Commissioner highlighted India’s clear vision of Viksit Bharat - a Developed India by 2047 and mentioned that India is well on track to become the world’s third-largest economy by the end of this decade. High Commissioner also highlighted initiatives taken by India to contribute to the development of Malawi and to enhance bilateral engagement with Malawi.
